Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

In Streatley we are very fortunate to live in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The centre of the village is a Conservation Area with protected fields and woods. We also border onto National Trust land, Lardon Chase, Lough Down and the Holies.

Streatley Meadows

This area, which is just off the High Street, is a delight to walk through, leading through to the recreation field which has facilities for all ages, including the children`s play area, a jogging track, picnic tables and an Astroturf basketball area.

Thames Path

Leaving the playing field you can take a short walk towards the church, where you join the Thames path leading down towards the river. From here you take the ½ mile stroll from Goring lock to Cleeve lock, the shortest `reach' between locks on the whole of the Thames.

Regatta Field

Just beyond Cleeve lock you reach the open fields where the Goring & Streatley Regatta is held, (organized by the Goring Gap Boat Club). Every summer 600 rowers compete in races, some serious, some not so much... And if that's not enough there is a funfair, arts and crafts, food and beer tents, and a loverly picnic atmosphere.

Green Hill & The Holies

There is a steep footpath from the Reading Road, south towards Pangbourne, that leads up to the Holies (also known as Green Hill ) where Streatley Parish Council has installed benches at regular intervals for the weary walker. This is a steep climb but well worth it as it has the most beautiful views down through Streatley to the river and over to Goring and beyond.

The Ridgeway

The Ridgeway National Trail (which can be found at the end of Rectory Road) follows the ancient Ridgeway from Overton Hill, near Avebury, to Streatley, then follows footpaths and parts of the ancient Icknield Way through the Chiltern Hills to Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire. This National Trail is 87 miles (140km) long.
